Groot Marico is just a 1 hour drive to or from Sun City and the Lost City which is one of South Africa’s most popular entertainment destinations.
Groot Marico is well known for its Mampoer tours. Mampoer is made from the fruit of the Marico, and it is as unflinching and unforgiving as the men who make it. It is nature boiled down its essence, and its essence is 65 - 75% alcohol. Mampoer makes no promises and tells no lies, and that is as it is in the Marico. It is a land that generates legends, and stories, but although they may not be facts, the stories are never untrue.
Adjacent to Sun City is the Pilanesburg Game Reserve, the 56 000 ha park is situated on the eroded remains of a 1 200 million year old extinct alkaline volcanic crater - one of only three such extensive craters in the world. The Pilanesberg countryside comprises numerous hills and broad open plains - the home of the Big Five. The park is well stocked with game and bird species.
The Madikwe Game Reserve is also within an easy traveling distance from Groot Marico. Madikwe is a new Big Five game reserve situated 90 km north of Zeerust. Covering some 60 000 ha, it is one of the largest game reserves in South Africa. The rich diversity of vegetation ensures a wide range of game and the topography offers ideal game viewing opportunities.
